If you're going to go with rfid, I suggest you check out the 125Khz tags,
as they have better range than the 13.56Mhz tags.  The lower frequency tend
to measure range in multiple inches (or more), while the high frequency
tags I've tried need almost contact between the tag and the reader
(range has been consistently less than 1 inch).

There are a number of vendors selling readers and tags on ebay, and you
should be able to get some various models to try for a relatively small
investment.  I've seen many arduino solutions to drive the readers,
including some that use an ESP8266 to build a wireless rfid reader that
can connect to your MH installation via MQTT.
