I use the MH Owfs_Item:

$Basement_Thermometer = new Owfs_Item("10.651A40000800", "Basement 
Thermometer");

Use the get method to specify what to get, then read it with state:

       my $temp = $Basement_Thermometer->get("temperature");
       my $temp = $Basement_Thermometer->state();

Of course you also need to install and setup owfs.

To me, that seemed to me like the most logical way to use them.

They are fairly reliable, but ever once in a while (maybe every 10,000 
or 100,000 readings) I get a strange result, like an indoor temperature 
of 80 C.  This is a minor thing, and for me only results in a text 
saying something is too hot so I haven't tried to figure out if it is a 
physical issue (interference), an owfs issue, or a Owfs_Item issue.

Also, I would definitely recommend soldering the connections.
