Has there been any recent talk (or desire?) to move to a more modern
language?

The two obvious choices I see would be Python or .NET Core.

I'd support either of those options, with the understanding that it would
be a massive undertaking, although perhaps a good time to draw a line in
the sand to stop supporting unused and very legacy code?
