Topic :> Dynamics Of Ontologies 16

o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o

Example 1. Prognostic Signs And Symptoms (cont.)

Now we can begin at the beginning, in a state of information that
is more like what we find at the beginning of a real-live inquiry.
The empirical situation that is reflected in the descriptive data
of Table 4 places us at Node 1 of the inquiry diagram, shown here:

Figure. Dynamics of Inquiry -- http://suo.ieee.org/ontology/gif00002.gif

Node 1. Descriptive Data -- http://suo.ieee.org/ontology/gif00004.gif

o-----------------------------------------------------------o
| Node 1. Descriptive Data |
o--------------o--------------o--------------o--------------o
| Condition | Affect | Outcome | Frequency |
o--------------o--------------o--------------o--------------o
| delirium | laughter | good | 120 |
| | | poor | 80 |
| | seriousness | good | 60 |
| | | poor | 90 |
o--------------o--------------o--------------o--------------o

The abductive transition to Node 2 reflects a re-conception of the empirical
rule of thumb as a rational hypothesis that governs the properties of unseen
cases while it serves to sum up the empirical laws affecting the known cases.

| |
| if laughter then less_dangerous; |
| |
| if seriousness then more_dangerous. |
