You could possibly use the D-Bus interface to Workrave.

Install D-Feet to see how it is structured. There is a command line interface to
D-Bus.

You could periodically query org.workrave.CoreINterface.GetTimerElapsed.
Parameters can be 'microbreak', 'restbreak', etc.
