I have been requesting that someone write a doc about this, esepcially the
steps to take to then claim that a phone is supported.

Shorter term, run experiments/gentestdata.py.  I wrote more details about
it a few weeks ago which you should find in this group's archives.

I would also like to see BitPim be more automatable.  That would allow it
to be a COM component under Windows, automatable under Mac and whatever
the flavour of the week component under Linux is.
