How to make BitPim work with Motorola E815 and Linux

I was able to get BitPim to talk to my Motorola E815 under Linux. I
don't see anyone else having solved this, so perhaps this info will be
of use to others.

The summary of the problem is: BitPim works fine syncing the phone book
with this phone under Windows, but fails under Linux with the following
error(s). This happens on many different versions of BitPim.

> 22:52:05.920 Moto-E815: Listing files in dir: 'motorola/shared/picture'
> 22:52:09.233 /dev/ttyACM0: Timed out - flushing and trying again
> 22:52:12.249 /dev/ttyACM0: Timed out waiting for 7e, requested bytes 1 - 0 bytes read
> 22:52:12.268 Error: Device needs attention - Moto-E815 on /dev/ttyACM0
> Moto-E815 on /dev/ttyACM0: The phone is not responding while manipulating the filesystem.

It turns out that if you use BitPim under Windows to delete certain
files in motorola/shared/pictures, then BitPim will sync the phone book
fine under Linux. Specifically, use the filesystem view to delete:

   EMS_glad.emp
   EMS_love.emp
   Graffiti.jpg
   Seashore.jpg

The process I used was: Use the filesystem view under Linux to look in
motorola/shared/picture. It won't work either. Watch the protocol log to
see the last file that was successfully listed. Then, under Windows,
list the same directory. Note the file listed *after* the one that was
successful; delete it. Try again under Linux. You'll get a little
farther and a new problem file can be identified and deleted. Repeat.

HTH,

Reid
