A little note to add:

You can request a maximum client MRU size of any arbitrary length (0 means
no limit) while sending a Connect request.
But note that because of the nature of capability negotiation, the gateway
can decide to choose a lower client sdu size if they wish.
In that case, there is little that you can do - except for choosing another
gateway.

Experiencewise, I went successfully up to 64 KB that a gateway would send
(not tried anything higher).
But also I found some gateways that would send no more than a 1.5 KB.
Especially the private gateways of network operators.

I am not sure what Kannel does (haven't looked so far into the code).
