Messages are not really stored inside Kannel. Kannel uses a file called kannel.store (which has to be enable in the config) to temporary store SMS it gets and has not submitted to the SMSC so they can still be submitted in the case of a crash of Kannel. There is also a mechanism to store some delivery report information in memory or in a database (MySQL for eample) as those information are kept over a longer timeperiod.
