You don't need the smsc but a special number that can be dialed by a 
modem because a modem answers the phone. Some providers provide that, 
some don't.
And you need such special number for each provider you wish to send a 
message to.

Probably because that number doesn't accept phone calls. If you dial 
from you cellphone, do you get a modem?
