Assuming that you are using Windows (XP?), open menu Start -> Settings 
-> Control Panel -> Java. Then, depending on your Java version, check 
the checkbox at:
[Version 1.4.2:] Basic tab -> Show Java in system tray.
[Version 1.5.0:] Advanced tab -> Miscellaneous -> Place Java icon in 
system tray.
