Mozilla mouse clicks, tabs and OSX

Using Mac OS X with Mozilla 1.6 (or Firefox 0.8), I can't get the mouse
wheel button to open new tabs with a click in the same way as I could
with PC versions. I also can't see how to do this with Preferences.
Probably 'missing the obvious' but would be grateful for any pointers
