Uninstall followed by install of Mozilla 1.7.2

Hello all--

I want to update Mozilla and not lose my preferences.

I have had a copy of Mozilla (1.6.something) on my G4 running OS 10.3. 
I wanted to install 1.7.2 because of security concerns.  The Mozilla 
site strongly recommended uninstalling the old copy of Mozilla before 
installing the new.  I followed the directions below (given at 
http://www.mozilla.org/docs/end-user/guide/get-started.html#installing-on-osX 
) for uninstalling:

To uninstall Mozilla,

    1. Remove the application files in 
/Users/<yourusername>/Library/Mozilla (but leave the Profiles sub-folder).
    2.Remove the file Mozilla Registry from 
/Users/<yourusername>/Library/Preferences
    3.Remove Mozilla from the installed location. (i.e. /Applications)

In /Users/<yourusername>/Library/Mozilla there was the Preferences 
subdirectory, which I didn't touch.  There were also two files, 
"Application Registry" and "pluginreg.dat", which I removed.

In /Users/<yourusername>/Library/Preferences, there was no file named 
"Mozilla Registry"--nothing even close.

I removed the old copy of Mozilla from Applications, installed the new 
in the same spot, and started it up.  I was told that my preferences 
would be imported from Netscape (NOT Mozilla).  There appeared to be no 
option to import my old Mozilla preferences.  And when it finished, I 
had none of my Mozilla preferences.

I've been able to recover my mail by directing Mail to look at my old 
preference file.  However, my bookmarks, etc., appear to be out of reach.

What SHOULD I have done to allow Mozilla to update itself properly?
