I'm not sure if this would have entirely worked, but to get your 
bookmarks back you can copy the bookmarks.html file that was in your 
old profile dir and just drop it in your new profile dir (which is 
in ~/Library/Mozila/Profiles/salted.dir) ..

in fact ..if you want to be bold, just make a copy/backup of your 
new profile dir to somewhere, then replace many of the things from 
your old profile dir to inside the new one and see what happens .. 
if it all gets hosed you have your backup w/ all the files you need 
to just replace it ... you can try replacing as many files as you 
like until you get tired of it crashing (or not, i dunno) and find 
out how much of your original prefs you reall could salvage.

I'm not a Mozilla spokesman, but that's what I'd do. I don't know 
how much of the profile internal stuffs has changed beetween 1.6 and 
1.7 but I guess that's one way to find out :-)

Did I mention to make a backup first? .. yeah, be sure to do that.
