Running AMD FX-4300 4 core cpu here so, for once, my system seems to fit 
in with "normal".

With layout.frame_rate set to -1 there is much less cpu peaking but the 
jerky slow screen updates are back - I also notice that the odd video 
that actually starts playing has reasonable audio playback but jerky video.
