They're version-independent from FFv4 forward. All the profile is 
forward compatible and usually backwards compatible as well.

There are vacuuming extensions/apps but they don't shrink the sqlite 
files much.
It's up you how often you backup. I do it about once a day (don't want 
to lose my mail) and keep 2 generations.
