Lost default profile. Profile manager can remember a profile

In the process of renaming a profile, I renamed the default profile
instead. Now, there are no profiles showing in the "profile Maanger".
I can create a profile and start the brower. However, after I quit and
restart, the profile manager requests that I make a profile. Profile
Files do get made in the location requested, but the profile manager
does not show any profiles on the list.

I have tried to make a profile call default. but the profile manager
states that the profile already exists. It does not show up on the
profile manager list.  I can make a profile "foo" and use it once but I 
have to remake it on the next startup.

I am running Win XP. The change in profile was done on the Netscape 7.0
profile Manager. This problem has affected
the Netscape 7.0
Mozilla 1.1 and
Mozilla 1.2b.

I have uninstalled them all and reinstalled and tried each separately.
I have gone in and removed the registry for mozilla and netscape prior
to the reinstalls. The problem still persist for all programs.

I don't want to create a profile every time I want to start the browser.

HELP!
