quicktime intercepts mp3 downloads

issue 1:  when a webpage said i needed the quicktime plugin, it
directed me to the apple page but no plugin was to be found, only the
install for the quicktime ap including the plugin.  Is the plugin
available separate from the full install?

issue 2:  -note: not to be confused with right clicking on a link and
doing a 'save as' - 
   When I paste a link for an mp3 into the goto location window,
quicktime opens in mozilla and prepares to play the mp3.. I want to
save it.  From the QT menu on the mozilla window, I clicked settings
and de-selected mp3 from the assigned file types.  QT still intercepts
and plays the mp3s I try to download.

any help in taming this plugin?
