That's not what I meant. But some time ago I found that the messages I
deleted even on my IMAP servers were never really gone (and so still
accumulate use diskspace) until I also compacted the folders. Even
though my IMAP folders only use a few hundred kB of messages the space
used by deleted messages (that are not visible from Mozilla) slowly
increased up to several MB until I compacted them. The setting "Clean up
(Expunge) Inbox on exit" didn't help.

Was that just a quirk of the IMAP server I was using at the time or a
general "feature" of Mozilla? At the moment I am mainly using an account
on a Courier IMAP server and there I cannot see it. However, on a
freemail account with web.de I still see that (no idea which IMAP server
they use).
