Can I have Thunderbird notify me of new messages ?

Hello

I would like Thunderbird to let me know about any new message in any
thread I have ever posted a message, and as soon as it sees the new
message.

I know newsreaders often have this facility but I don't know how to
set up Thunderbird to do this for me.

So how could I set up Thunderbird to notify me of new messages ?
