The reason I prefer using a combination of Firefox and Thunderbird is 
their compactness.  There is much less so-called "feature bloat", 
because they are stripped down to the very basics.  Any additional 
features can be added by installing extensions.  Mozilla, on the other 
hand, comes with everything, including a number of applications that I 
currently don't use and probably never will use.  (For example, there is 
bundled a web-authoring program and an IRC client, as well as a few 
other things.)  The result is a smaller, faster program that is more 
closely tailored to my personal uses.
