I couldn't retrieve the lost bookmarks - I've started laboriously 
re-creating them.  The additional redundancy of importing them into IE 
sounds great.  I've just done it, although I don't expect to maintain 
it.  But it would save me a lot of time if my backup strategy fails (I'm 
currently backing up the entire Firefox Application data subdir - which 
is what I'm now using instead of Mozilla).
