I've never really liked Outlook but lots of people use it. Howard's 
right that Outlook is designed to be used with Exchange and with 
Exchange in a corporate environment (i.e. any business, even small ones, 
that base their domain on Windows and have Exchange, as a business are 
often interested in the calendaring aspects and tight integration 
offered by the Outlook/Exchange combo). As such I think I a lot of 
casual home users switch to Outlook because 1) they have MS Office and 
2) use Outlook at work thus are more familar with it...

And 3) don't care very much about newsgroups. Never understood why MS 
didn't put newsgroup functionality into Outlook and ditched Outlook 
Express, perhaps offering a separate Outlook Home for home users and 
Outlook Enterprise as part of a package for businesses. The Outlook Home 
could offer calendaring but no real integration to Exchange for group 
based calendaring...
