I just reset a mail password on the server, grabbed mail with Thunderbird and the whole thing was over in 16 packets. That's packets, not retries. It asked for a new password once, I entered it and that was all. Maybe you need to work with your mail admin people as this doesn't look like a Thunderbird problem. -- Pete.
