For a 'lite' equivalent to Firefox, use K-Meleon http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/

K-Meleon uses the Gecko rendering engine like Firefox does,
but will be less taxing on your old hardware.

I run K-Meleon on an AMD-K6 233 mhz computer.
