To add another bit of information... As soon as I install the Yahoo Toolbar 
in the new profile, the problem returns. Remove it, and the problem goes 
away. Pretty clear evidence, I think. I can't live without the toolbar, so 
the Huffington post is IE only on my machine from now on.

I don't know what the problem with safe mode is - I used the -safe-mode 
switch, but it still loaded the toolbar, which is clearly listed as an 
extension. Let me show you... oh, no... NOW it starts without the toolbar. I 
swear, it didn't do that before...

Okay, here's the problem: when I started in safe mode, I had another 
instance of Firefox already open. In that case, apparently, the toolbar 
extension is enabled by the existing instance, overriding the -safe-mode 
switch.

So, it's the Yahoo toolbar, not the profile.
