Besides trying to guess it.  If he used to _type_ the passphrase in, then he had hardly forgotten it entirely, a lot of information left, that may turn exhaustive search feasible.

You says it, as if propagating keys via independent channels (‘manual’) and attaching them to all outcoming mail per ‘Autocrypt’ standard are mutual exclusive options.  They are not, and in fact, as you could notice, OP is _already_ using Autocrypt, at least for this account.

Neither it does anything to do with the issue of forgotten passphrase.

Presumably, you mean the Vincent Breitmoserʼs one.  I would not suggest to use software, that is both experimental and dead.  Even less to begin using such a software only to abandon it in a range of few months to few years any way.
