AdBlock, NoScript and such do stop/affect what displays on your system.
That's what I had in mind. I've had to "disable on this page" a couple
of times.

Well, I'm looking at a new desktop just to be able to clean up my
digitised 8mm films (three hours done so far, about 20 more to go). The
program I want to use needs a lot more power than this almost 10-year
old box offers. I need a faster CPU, about 6GB more RAM, and a graphics
card..... And the program requires Win10 (I think bec. Win10 has a more
efficient interface between GPU and CPU.)

Question is, can I persuade myself to ditch an otherwise perfectly good
machine just for this purpose? Plus lighten my wallet by about $1,000.
So far, my scrooginess has j kept me from spending the dosh. But I'm
weakening.....

So it's not always bling.

Sigh.
