I have a similar problem in Chrome! Not exactly the same: often the 
download completes, but within a minute Chrome starts misbehaving, then 
consumes resources rapidly, then closes. Any download - even just saving 
a picture.

For me, no problem in Firefox or Edge! (Windows 7-32.)

In my case Chrome and Edge are up to date, Firefox is ancient (26).
