If you go to any of the sport pages on tvnz.co.nz, then select a short video (these are basically news segments), then mplayer gets stuck in an endless loop without playing anything. For example, http://tvnz.co.nz/, click on "sport", then "Rugby", then choose an item under the "rugby video" pane.
