Might try adding 'nocache=true' to the embed tag to see if that helps.
you can also try adding 'debug=true' and then run firefox from the
command line and see if anything comes out on the terminal.

I would also try a couple of vo's like x11 or xv and see if any of them
gives better results.

also, you may need to add 'demuxer=lavf' to your ~/.mplayer/config file.
