Run firefox from a terminal, and enabled debug in mplayerplug-in. You
should see the errors that mplayer is generating as to why you have no
sound.

I'm guessing it is a sharing issue with oss.

BTW, the Red's Nightmare video or the juggler video doesn;t have any
audio if I recall correctly.
