what happens is the following:
1) the bookmarks menu only contains the administrative items
   - no bookmarks
2) the 'Personal Toolbar' contains neither the bookmarks nor the
   bookmarks folder item
3) the homepage isn't activated automatically even when enabled
   - you only get a blank page
4) the URL-bar remains blank

as stated : deleting localstore.rdf resolves the issue
