Yes, you use totally wrong tool...
Mozilla Mail is not intended to be used for mass downloading multipart 
binary news articles.
Use tools for downloading from binary newsgroups - NewsLeecher, NewsGrabber, 
NewsBin, Binary News Reaper, etc.
