The problem has turned out to be the Googlebox. I deleted every single group of prefs in turn from prefs.js and the group that caused the problem was the "multizilla.integrated*" group. Delete those prefs from prefs.js (with Moz closed) and Mozilla will start again. If you get asked if you want to enable Googlebox on startup, just say no. I'll update the website to note this incompatibility and file a bug.
