Well, then why doesn't this work?

Writing this I use Firefox 5.0 installed on Jun 16th, opening the
about box I get "Firefox is up to date" although 5.0.1 and even 6.0
are available from Mozille FTP .

I think removing the version number is a bad idea as it leaves you
with a simple sentence that you have to trust without a chance of
double checking using (for example) the version number.

Thus as long as this automation does not even work correctly the only
impression you can get is that all this stuff is basically about
hiding incapabilities of auto-update and giving users a false sense of
security.

Furthermore taking into account the availability of extensions (in my
opinion one of the key features of Firefox) being bound to certain
version numbers it's quite valid that users want to know about the
version of Firefox they are using.
