Silent Update Question

When did silent update begin, what version? Users are complaining that
they have disabled auto-update but are getting updated anyway.

The way I see it is that if you have Tools => Options => Advanced =>
Update set for (checked) "Automatically check for updates", Firefox
checked and then "Ask me ..." there will be the choice to get the update
or not, etc.

However, users that have that first box UNchecked to check for updates,
and they receive updates anyway, it must be a bug. This is why I'm
asking when silent update started and maybe a simple explanation of how
this works regarding the update preferences.

I assume (?) that Thunderbird is not in the "Silent Update" arena?
