It doesn't. That is, Firefox ignores the 'Ask' pref after manually checking for updates. Presumably TB will ignore it too. Unless you want the update shoved down your throat, or to go through all the bs of uninstalling, *never* touch the check for updates button. (unless, of course, you want the newer version.)
