I wasn't anywhere near those decisions, but I think the solution
should have been to build, release, and upgrade all platforms to
5.0.1. I understand upgrade fatigue, but I think the confusion caused
by trying to make that platform specific was far worse than any
upgrade fatigue issues. Since on Windows and Linux the only thing
changing was the version string, it would have been a very tiny
upgrade.
Fixing that by yanking the version number out of the about box is a
pretty significant baby/bathwater failure.
