Following up myself...

I just realized that EE is right, but I did so only after trying out the
"clear recent history" button.  Once you have decided to really clear
"history" (which was not my intention) you get a  box "details" that you
can click.  And there, lo and behold, is the old menu, with the settings
from the previous firefox version by the way (in my case "cookies" and
"cache"), where you can choose what to erase.  But I must say this is
misleading, given the fact that "history" had a particular meaning
before, referring to only the list of visited websites.
