My personal preference would clearly be to reply to the list by default. 
I am receiving these mails from the list and thus my answers should 
usually also be public.

BTW: As a replied to this thread, I recognize Thunderbird (v3.01) 
offered two reply buttons, "reply" and "reply to list" (or similar, 
since I am using a localized release).
