I tried VLC, and it looks fine, too. I also took apart your 
part_with_subs.vob file with spuunmux, and the resulting PNG files don’t 
seem corrupted in any way.

In future, with any problem involving subtitles, I would recommend using 
spuunmux to extract the subpicture images to check they look OK. It’s 
also worth burning a test disc and trying it on a consumer player. I’m 
not sure that any of the Free Software players is fully reliable with 
DVD-Video; I’ve even had trouble with VLC lately.
