.utf8 Files?

In the code for reading subtitle files in spumux, there is an odd little feature: if the name of the file ends in “.utf”, “.utf8” or “.utf-8”, then the contents of the file are assumed to be encoded in UTF-8, ignoring any value you may have set for the “characterset” attribute in the <textsub> tag. To me, this seems like an interim kludge which was put in before the “characterset” support was added. Does anybody actually make use of this feature?
