However, I tend to make "pathological" DVDs (ones with many short chapters ~100 frames or less, with complicated rules to choose which chapter to play next according to random numbers). The current problem I have with VLC (the version in Ubuntu Karmic) is that it plays the first chapter, then goes crazy jumping between chapters but without playing the video content - as if the cell commands are executed at the start of the chapter instead of at the end. If I am correct in assuming that the cell command should execute after the video has played (?), I think I should file a bug with VLC. Hardware players tend to cope fine, and are the definitive players to test on, but the seek time with a physical disc leads to lots of short pauses (earlier versions of VLC had similar behaviour) and I worry about stress on the motors. Perhaps I should look into technology other than DVD for algorithmically controlled playback of lots of short videos - is there anything else out there that's reasonably cross platform and an open standard / free software / etc?
