spumux problems on OS X

I have installed dvdauthor 0.6.14-3 through Fink on Mac OS X 10.6.
I have used spumux to mux srt subtitles into a DVD stream and that works
perfectly. But I want to spiff up my DVD with a menu as well, so I followed
the instructions on this page to create a basic DVD menu:
http://radagast.bglug.ca/linux/dvd_authoring/dvd_authoring.html
My spumux XML file looks as follows:
<subpictures>
<stream>
<spu
force="yes"
start="00:00:00.00"
image="MenuNormal.png"
select="MenuSelected.png"
highlight="MenuActive.png"
autooutline="infer"
autoorder="rows"
outlinewidth="18">
</spu>
</stream>
</subpictures>
However, no matter what I try, spumux on OS X always exits as follows:
INFO: Locale=en_US.UTF-8
INFO: Converting filenames to UTF-8
spumux: Unable to load file (MenuNormal.png).
WARN: Bad image, skipping line -1
INFO: 0 subtitles added, 1 subtitles skipped, stream: 32, offset: 0.18
I compiled dvdauthor 0.6.18 myself but its spumux (mis)behaves in exactly
the same way. Since I suspect this problem is related to ImageMagick, it
may be worthwhile to mention that it's compiled against ImageMagick 6.4.1.
I have tried to get a more specific error out of spumux by changing the
verbose level, but no success. The file MenuNormal.png is definitely
present and has a two-color index just like the examples on that webpage.
If I replace it with one of those example images, I get exactly the same
error. I have tried moving everything to different paths, using BMP
instead, but always "Unable to load file".
On Linux, the exact same files with the exact same XML file work perfectly.
So for the time being I can do the menus on Linux, but I don't like being
dependent on access to a Linux box. Any clues how this can be fixed in OS
X?
Alex
