So I dug a little deeper and added a line to the source code that showed that the actual exception was "NoDecodeDelegateForThisImageFormat". That doesn't make any sense, because libpng is installed and Magick can handle PNG images. There must have been something messed up about my ImageMagick installation, so I removed and re-installed it, and now spumux works. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
