No, OS X doesn't hide extensions except optionally for application packages,
but I have never enabled that option. The files specified in the XML file
are certainly present, and if I copy the directory to Linux without changing
anything, spumux runs without errors.

The 'display' command works. So I dug a little deeper and added a line to
the source code that showed that the actual exception was
"NoDecodeDelegateForThisImageFormat". That doesn't make any sense, because
libpng is installed and Magick can handle PNG images. There must have been
something messed up about my ImageMagick installation, so I removed and
re-installed it, and now spumux works. Thanks for pointing me in the right
direction.
