On Debian derivatives, a command like

     apt-get build-dep dvdauthor

should be a good start. I think the only additional dependency in newer
versions is fontconfig, and that’s optional. Though highly recommended.

Remember that the distribution tarball already has the configure and
Makefile files generated, so automake, autoconf and gettext are
unnecessary at that stage. Similarly bison and flex are not needed
because they were already invoked when the tarball was generated.

Somebody working with the original source tree (as you are) will need
these additions, of course. But in this situation, needing things like
automake and autoconf pretty much goes without saying, anyway.

As for the others ... well, the user finds out about them from the error
messages reported when running the configure script. That’s how other
packages seem to do it. So you install the missing dependencies and
rerun configure. So long as there aren’t huge numbers of dependencies,
this doesn’t seem too onerous. :)
