Remember that widescreen footage can be shown on a 4:3 screen in 2 
different ways: letterboxed, or pan-and-scan. In both cases, the 
subpicture stream is scaled to fill the screen, not to match the picture 
bounds.

Basically, you need to provide up to 3 different versions of the 
subpicture stream in this case: a “widescreen” one for use on widescreen 
TVs, and one or both of a “letterbox” or “pan-and-scan” versions for use 
on 4:3 TVs.
