Yeah, this is one of those oddities of the DVD-Video spec.

I did put together a couple of Wiki pages giving an overview of 
DVD-Video here <http://www.wlug.org.nz/DVDVideo> and here 
<http://www.wlug.org.nz/DVDVideoTerminology>. The latter does mention this.

See the dvdauthor(1) man page:

        <subpicture [lang="language-code"]>
            <stream mode="normal|widescreen|letterbox|panscan"
                ...
                id="streamid" />
            [<stream ... />]
         </subpicture>
         [<subpicture ... />]

It’s that “mode” attribute you want. Use spumux to multiplex all the 
subpicture streams together with the video, then tell dvdauthor which 
one is to be used when.

I will admit I have yet to put together a working example of how to do 
this. So give it a try and let us know how you go. :)
