From my own notes, I use <spu start="00:00:00.00" .... rather than your end="00:00:00.00" (anybody know which is correct and why?), but I don't think this is a problem. Did you save the png images with indexed color mode? After you complete the image using less than 4 colors, select image->mode->indexed in Gimp (or however this is done in the particular graphic app you are using) and then save out the png. I also select "save background color" and "save color values for transparent pixels" in the file save option dialog in Gimp.
